Farewell to Mark Long and Abbey Birch

With heavy but grateful hearts, we say goodbye to our longtime and much-loved parishioners, Mark Long and Abbey Birch. After many years of faithful presence, friendship, and service among us, they will be moving to Florida in September.

Mark and Abbey have been a true blessing to Emmanuel. Their warmth, steady faith, and quiet example have strengthened our parish family in countless ways. We will miss them deeply.

The Holy Orthodox Church has always taught that human life is sacred from the moment of conception. Every child in the womb is created in the image of God and is under His care and protection.

We therefore firmly oppose and condemn the new Massachusetts law signed in August 2026 that removes meaningful restrictions on abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy. Under this law, an abortion may now be performed at any stage based solely on the “professional judgment of the physician.” In practice, this opens the door to the destruction of unborn children late in pregnancy—even up to the time of birth.

The Church cannot remain silent in the face of such legislation. The deliberate taking of innocent human life is a grave sin. We reject any legal framework that treats the unborn as disposable or subjects their lives to the unlimited discretion of others.

At the same time, the Church continues to offer compassion, pastoral care, and the path of repentance to all who have been involved in abortion. Christ receives those who turn to Him with a broken and contrite heart.

We call upon the faithful to pray for the protection of the unborn, for the conversion of hearts, and for laws that recognize the dignity of every human person from conception to natural death.

Lord, have mercy.
